2. “Damn
it!” Seth heard Drew curse as he walked into the rec room. He
smiled, Drew must be having problems with the sound system
again. The funny thing was that no one else had any drama
with it. Drew was the only one it wouldn’t work for
properly. A few
weeks ago Drew had taken over a large room on the upper floors and
turned it into an unofficial meeting place for the Omega. The room
was more of a recreation room than anything else and had everything
they needed to relax and just hang out, including a sound system that
had Ross salivating and often lured him in with his
guitar. Something that suited Drew, she loved listening to
him, and as a result she had the whole of Ross’s band, Requiem,
wrapped round her little finger, so you’d often find them in the
rec room with the Omega giving some unplugged entertainment. Even
the sentins were fond of lounging around on he huge pillows put down
specifically for them. Drew’s
back was turned to Seth so he snuck up to her and wrapped his arms
around her to lay a kiss in her neck. He
laughed when Drew squealed and jumped. “What’s
the ‘damn it’ about?” He asked. She
turned in his arms and slipped hers around his neck. “The
sound system is acting up again.” “Well
don’t listen to music then, come to bed with me instead.” He
flashed her a lascivious grin, and a naughty wink. “Now
if that isn’t a good idea I don’t know what is.” She
pulled his head down to kiss him. “Oh
for god sake, you two have a room could you please use it.” Ross’s
complaint behind Seth made them break the kiss and turn toward
Ross. “Well said
Ross. I’m trying to listen to music here. I don’t feel
like dying of a sugar overdose, and that would be really hard
considering that I’m already dead.” Kyle
was sitting next to the sound system, and had been having fun
changing the disc every time Drew tried to put her music
on. Something he did to irritate her quiet often. It
was a hoot when she fetched Darius or Crimson and told them to fix
the sound system when there was nothing wrong with it. They’d
look at her like she lost it, and Drew would inevitably end up
yelling at one or both of them. It was fun to drive his
future sister in law nuts, and for him fun had been in short supply
for quiet a while. Kyle’s
spirit had been trapped in the mausoleum that housed his body for
fifty years. He’d only gotten out of the building a
month or so ago. He still didn’t know why he’d been
released, but he suspected it had something to do with the Nexus
prophecy. His brother Seth and Drew had been the first
pair of the prophecy that claimed there would be pairs created who
would be the first line of defense against a coming
darkness. Everyone was speculating who would be next to
become part of a Nexus. Most of the Omega were praying it
wasn’t them. At least out loud in their macho way. Kyle
had a feeling that like him - they secretly envied Seth and
Drew. There was no way to mistake how happy the couple
was. Since being
released from the mausoleum he’d learnt to flex his spiritual
abilities a lot. He could do a lot more than just listen
to everyone around him now. They still couldn’t hear or
see him, but Kyle had the ability to move things around and messing
with anything electrical was a breeze. Kyle
had missed a lot since his death and he was enjoying catching
up. There were things about this day and age he
loved. The music for one – it rocked. Television
was another. He’d learnt a lot from the compound’s DVD
collection. “Ross
there is something wrong with this sound system. I’m
telling you now. It’s that or I’m loosing it.” Drew
complained. “Watch.” Drew
moved out of Seth’s arms and leaned down to press play on the
Requiem CD she had in the disc player. It started playing
perfectly. Drew frowned at the CD player. Kyle
grinned. He couldn’t have his brother thinking his mate
was going insane so he bent past Drew and pressed the shuttle to go
to disc five, a Breaking Benjamin CD he loved. “What
the?” Ross moved past Drew to peer at the sound system. “You’ve
had Dar and Crimson check it out?” “Countless
times.” Drew frowned. Ross
pushed the button to change the CD. The sound of the
shuttle was clear in the quiet room. Seth stepped closer
to see what would happen. The new CD started playing, only
to cut off abruptly as Kyle changed it to another CD. Seth
laughed. “If I didn’t know better I’d say we have a
ghost.” “He
has some brains.” Kyle crowed as he picked up a scatter pillow of a
nearby chair and threw it at his brother. “Holy
shit!” Seth caught the pillow inches from his face. Drew
and Ross were staring in amazement. “There
is a ghost here?” Seth asked, his face a little pale. “Hell
- do I have to hit you?” Kyle threw another pillow at
Seth. “We are
being haunted.” Ross sounded surprised. “No
shit?” Kyle rolled his eyes. “Who
is it?” Drew asked. “I’ll
be damned if I know.” Seth shrugged his
shoulders. Kyle
felt a pulse in the air, something strange was happening in the
entrance hall of the compound. “Time
for the mighty Ghost-Man to check it out.” He boomed in
a deep voice and faded out of the rec room. “Don’t
we have mythos who is a medium of sorts? Someone who could
talk to the ghost?” Drew asked. “Not
here. We’ll have to go talk to the big boss and ask him
to request some assistance from the Psy. One of their
Walkers should be able to communicate with the spirit.” Seth
suggested. “You’re
forgetting that Psy Walkers are rare, and they won’t easily let
them out of Haven.” Ross pointed out. “Can’t
we find a normal medium?” Drew asked frowning. “We
could, but a lot of the times their powers are unreliable. Our
best chance to get this all sorted is to get a Psy Walker. They
interact with the spirit world as if it was a physical part of ours.”
Seth answered. “What
exactly does that mean?” “To
a Walker a ghost is as real as you or I.” Ross explained.
“You mean a they can touch
a ghost?” “Yes
and talk to, and interact with. The psy call them Walkers
because they can ‘walk’ between two plains of
existence.” “Pretty
freaky.” Drew winced. “I’m glad I’m not a Walker,
I’d spend most of my time thinking I’m insane.” “A
lot of them do go insane. That’s why the gift is a
blessing and a curse.” Ross told Drew. “It
sounds like a tough job.” “And
then some.” Seth agreed. Kyle
materialized in the entrance hall just as the energy he was feeling
pulsed one last time and a woman appeared where there had been
nothing a moment before. It
took him a moment to take her in then he started grinning as he moved
round behind her. Sorcha
removed the ear buds of her mp3 player and looked around the entry
hall of the compound. “Now
if you aren’t a whole lot of pretty all at once.” He
whistled low. “Some serious hot.” Sorcha
stiffened but didn’t say anything, the man was behind her so she
couldn’t be sure he was talking to her, but she could hear his deep
voice circling her, she’d see soon enough whether or not he was
talking about her. When
she did see him Sorcha was rendered speechless. He stepped
around her to stand in front of her. Sorcha had never felt
such instant attraction in her life. Tall and broad
shouldered, his wore only a pair of jeans, the strong muscles of his
chest on display. She watched him move and the play of
flexing muscles under smooth skin as he turned to look at her
properly. His waist length black hair was braided in two
braids one flowing down over each pectoral. A tribal
tattoo was inked across the curve of his right shoulder.
The man is yummy, oh scrap that
he is beyond yummy. The thought bloomed through
Sorcha’s mind. “Ouch!
Hot no matter what angle you look from - I want a piece of that!”
he grinned displaying a set of dimples. Sorcha
was flattered that he found her attractive, but he was going a bit
overboard there, she was standing listening to him, so she opened her
mouth to tell him he was being extremely rude and that she wasn’t a
steak on display in a butcher – when she felt the air pulse as
Raven finally caught up with her. Raven
stumbled as she materialized, which told Sorcha the Psy had tried to
take a short cut to catch up faster. She was taking
chances. That could have ended her up in a
wall. Sorcha
watched the man take Raven in and expected him to forget that she
existed when faced with Raven’s beauty. She
was pleasantly surprised when he twisted his lips. “Not
a touch on this one.” Then he looked over at Sorcha again with a
hungry expression. “Why
didn’t you wait for me Sorcha?” Raven hissed at her. “I
told you to catch up.” Sorcha was mortified, how could
Raven start complaining in front of the stranger. “I’m
going to tell my father what you did today.” Raven threatened
her. Sorcha wanted
to tell the other psy to grow some manners. They shouldn’t
be discussing this in front of strangers and that she wasn’t scared
of Raven’s father so Raven should go ahead and tell
him. But
she had to swallow laughter instead when the man looked over at Raven
and said. “Folks – we have a whiner. Why
don’t you just run off to daddy little girl and leave me and Sorcha
here to get to know each other a little better.” His
wicked grin quickly put a stop to the laughter that had bubbled up
and replaced it with coiling heat low in her stomach. She
was surprised when Raven didn’t reply to the man’s
comment. A tall
blond man came down the stairs, one hand trailing on the
banister. “Well
this is a surprise. We haven’t had a Psy in the compound
in a long time. Now we have two. Welcome
ladies. I’m Gabriel.” “Gabriel
of the Forsaken?” Sorcha asked as she stepped forward and extended
her hand. At his
nod she spoke again. “I’m Sorcha, and this is Raven. We
have come with a request from Haven’s counsel.” Gabriel
took her hand. “Welcome Sorcha and Raven. I’d
be happy to hear what your counsel needs from this compound. Shall
we go to the living room?” Sorcha
felt her cheeks heat when the other man growled – literally
growled. The sound was low and trickled out of his throat
then he spoke and Sorcha wanted the earth to open up and swallow
her. “Enough
touchy Gabe. You shook her hand you can let go
now.” Gabriel
released her hand. “This way ladies.” He
led the way to the living room. Oh
thank goodness, it looked like Gabriel was going to ignore the other
man’s rudeness. The last thing Sorcha wanted was Gabriel to get
upset and refuse to help them. She’d have to go back to
the Psy counsel with her head hung low. Raven
pushed past Sorcha to follow directly behind Gabriel. Sorcha
was too relieved that Gabriel was going to listen to pay attention to
Raven’s bad behavior - it wasn’t unusual anyway. “So
she’s a bitch too.” She heard the man say behind her as she
followed behind Raven. There
was no way Raven is letting him call her a bitch, Sorcha
thought. She was amazed when Raven said nothing. She
almost asked Raven why she let it go – not that she didn’t agree
with the sentiment. But she got distracted when he
commented behind her. “Those
jeans look damn good on that ass.” Sorcha
gasped, and felt her cheeks flame, the man was beyond rude. She
found him just as attractive but she hadn’t been making comments
the whole time. Ha! Like she’d ever be bold
enough to tell a guy she found him attractive. Especially
with Raven around. The man would be putty in Raven’s
hands before Sorcha could finish her sentence. That was
besides the point though, he hadn’t even introduced himself to
them. He really needed a lesson in manners. Kyle
was surprised how attracted he was to Sorcha. Especially
when he took such offence to Gabriel holding her hand too long after
greeting her. It wasn’t as if Kyle could have
her. Being dead had kinda ruined his sex life, but that
didn’t mean he couldn’t enjoy a beautiful woman so he followed
Sorcha to the living room. He
wanted to hear what the Psy were doing at the compound. Hey,
maybe he’d get lucky and Sorcha and the Raven woman were just the
first – maybe the Psy would send a walker.
